Sri Lanka has been fined for a slow over-rate during the thrilling first ODI against Zimbabwe in Harare. The ICC imposed a penalty of five percent of the players' match fees after the team was found to be one over short of the required rate, even after time allowances were taken into account.
The fine was handed down by Jeff Crowe, member of the Emirates ICC Elite Panel of Match Referees, under Article 2.22 of the ICC Code of Conduct, which deals with minimum over-rate violations. According to the rule, teams are fined 5% of their match fee per over short of the target.
Sri Lanka's acting captain, Charith Asalanka, accepted the sanction and pleaded guilty, avoiding the need for a formal hearing.
The match itself was a nail-biter, with Sri Lanka clinching victory by just 7 runs, thanks to a stunning final-over hat-trick by Dilshan Madushanka.
